Adrenal cortex in marasmic children.

چکیده
The effect of malnutrition on the adrenal cortex has not been well studied. Earlier reports suggested that malnutrition in man produced adrenocortical hypofunction (Zubiratn and Gomez-Mont, 1953), and more recent reports suggest normal function (Lurie and Jackson, 1962) and possibly hyperfunction of the adrenal cortex in malnourished infants (Alleyne and Young, 1966). The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of the marasmic type of malnutrition on the integrity and functional reserve of the adrenal cortex using the ACTH stimulation test (Liddle, Estep, Kendall, Williams, and Townes, 1959).

The effect of protein-calorie malnutrition on the composition of the human femur.
I. A femur was analysed from each of the following malnourished children: five Turkish (4-7.5 months; marasmic), eight Jamaican (9-13 months; two marasmic, one marasmic with kwashiorkor, three with kwashiorkor, two ‘malnourished’) and two Ugandan (I: and 12 months; marasmic and with kwashiorkor respectively). These were matched with appropriate controls. Dry weight, fat, total nitrogen, collage...
متن کاملPattern of protein-energy malnutrition in Sudanese children and comparison with some other Middle East countries.
Tne classification of protein-calorie malnutrition suggested by the Wellcome Trust Working party was employed in 119 children under the age of 4 years admitted to Khartoum Hospital with severe malnutrition between May and December 1973. Our findings compare closely with findings from other centres using the same classification. All children were below 80% of the Boston standard for weight. 58% ...
متن کاملOxidative Stress in Marasmic Children: Relationships with Leptin
Aim: We aimed to investigate the levels and relationships of antioxidants, lipid peroxidation and leptin altogether in marasmic malnutrition. Method: Thirty marasmic children (age 14.4±10.3 months) and 28 control subjects were included. Erythrocyte superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) activities, glutathione (GSH) level, and serum malondialdehyde (MDA) and leptin levels were measured. ...

Background & Aims: Changing the hormonal output of endocrine glands, diabetes leads to the occurrence of secondary metabolic disorders. Neuropathy, on the other hand, is the most common neurological complication of diabetes which affects the neuroendocrine system, in addition to peripheral and autonomic nervous system, contributing to exacerbation of disease severity. In this line, the present ...
متن کاملAflatoxins and kwashiorkor: a study in Sudanese children.
Blood and urine samples from 252 Sudanese children were investigated for their aflatoxin content by high-performance liquid chromatography. The children comprised 44 with kwashiorkor, 32 with marasmic kwashiorkor, 70 with marasmus, and 106 age-matched, normally nourished controls. Aflatoxins were detected more often and at higher concentrations in sera from children with kwashiorkor than in the...
